"Columbia Academy has been able to offer many things to my son and family that no other school has. At the age of two, my son began showing a strong interest in reading and the ability to start spelling words. He started learning and advancing so quickly at home and I realized at this time, that it could be a real challenge to find a school that would be the right fit for a child of his age. At three years old we started looking for a school that could challenge him because by this time, he was already reading. I first called our local school district and they informed me that there was nothing they could provide for him until he was almost six.
I searched many other schools and was able to find one that promised academics that would be formed to meet his needs and said they would have no problem keeping him challenged. After about two months, the teachers told me that he was not doing his projects and did not want to participate in class. After hearing this, I sat down to talk to my son about it and he said so innocently, 'Mom, I am bored coloring, I want to learn my numbers and ABCs.' After that day, he did not go back. We started the search again and after trying one other school that didn't work, we fortunately came across Columbia Academy's ad in the phone book and decided to give them a call.
I was so impressed when I talked to the staff and took a tour of the school. My son came and saw all the books and activities in the classroom and was so excited. After his trial day, it was set. We finally found the perfect match!
My son is now in the 3rd grade. He has read well over 700 books since he started this program and is 6 years old. My daughter also attends the school. She just turned 5 and reads to me everyday. Most schools just look at a child’s age and place them accordingly into a grade level for that age group, instead of letting kids go at their own pace.
It’s not just the academics though; one of the best things I find about this school is the ethics. The kids are so well-behaved and all have such a sense of pride about helping one another. Whenever something happens to my son like falling in the mud, I never hear of another child making fun of him, but instead how they help him to the restroom with a fresh set of clothes to change into. The amount of comfort and joy that Columbia Academy gives not only to my son but to my family as well is truly beyond words."
